Which side is the front?

Neither, and that is deliberate. Both faces are fully finished. One runs slightly deeper in tone than the other, so the choice is about the room rather than about wear.

Does it have anti-slip backing?

No, because it is reversible, and a backing on one face would defeat that. It relies on weight and on tucking into the seat crease.

How does washing affect the fringe?

It holds. Using a mesh laundry bag stops it tangling with zips and other items in the same load.
