Over the arms, not across the back. Start the tape at the outside of one arm, run it over the arm, across the seat, and over the outside of the other arm. Match that total to the range on each size.
What if the sofa measures right on the line between two sizes?
Take the larger one. The stretch will grip a sofa that is slightly small for it, but no amount of pulling makes a cover reach across a sofa that is too big.
Will it fit an L shaped sectional?
Yes, with one cover per section. Measure the chaise and the straight section separately, pick a size for each, and the two covers meet in the corner.
